The publishing system is alright I guess, but the whole thing is still quite “heavy” and not that clear... Also pictures’ format and resolution is not respected and cut to the same constant resolution all the time. That makes publishing panoramic pictures impossible to view unless someone actually click on them. So you end up with cars cut in half from time to time.

Other than that, it’s not bad really. Fairly well made for what is more or less a beta...

It’s not possible to register for now I think... Only single articles can be shared, but the website itself cannot be browsed without being login.

I’m a Tribe leader, but I haven’t gotten my email yet.

Shouldn’t be too long I think... (It’s still closed right now... so empty in fact that I got to exchange a couple messages with James May about single cylinder engines. Not sure I can sleep tonight.)

It said early November in the first email, so they’ve got some time left.

It’s rolling out right now, all week long. After that, some preregistered users will be given access too. Right now very few people are around. Less than 200 people registered to Jeremy Clarkson’s “tribe” so I guess around 200 people have access to it at the moment lol (they force you to subside to 6 tribes when you first register... My guess is that most people subscribe to Clarkson-May-Hammond)

How long did it take them to get back to you?

I did the application thing like two weeks ago I think...

It was pretty fast actually... A couple days and I sent my application on the weekend. I did it quite a few weeks back though.

Either find a good qualified job and get the company hiring you to sponsor you, or become an English teacher, or apply for a work holiday visa or marry a Japanese. If you’re still a student, exchanges are possible too. Only ways to move in Japan

I’d stick out like a sore thumb out there, and it is the one of the most monocultural nations. But it’s also not about to be taken over by white supremacists and xenophobes. People are already being targeted. Seriously considering my options at this point...

The main difference with racism in Japan and racism in the US, is that in Japan, when it happens against whites or blacks (racism against Korean and Chinese is different), it usually has to do with genuine ignorance. “Oh I don’t want to rent my appartment to foreigners... it’s too hard to communicate, I don’t want that”, or “Why do you have so many black guys in the french soccer team?? Are they french? Why?” (These are genuine exemples I had to deal with and try to explain lol) but never with agressivity and hate like “I want muslims out of here!” or “I hate blacks” (If you are Chinese, Korean or Brazilian, you might encounter this kind of behavior though...). They just don’t know better but are eager to learn and discover “new people”. Also this happens pretty much solely outside of cities, in the country side.

But yeah, you’re definitely held to a different status in here and clearly are not Japanese. You always FEEL like a foreigner, but never in a bad way. It’s hard to explain, but definitely an experience to have! Uncomparably better than having to deal with the KKK parading on the streets for sure haha :)

The form was still open then, so not sure why it wouldn’t be seen. Looks like it’s closed now.

Unfortunately that kills my interest in the site quite a bit.

Asides from what Flavien said, Japan’s cultural homogenity, as reflected by hafus and the Ainu being marked as “Japanese” in the census and the outright refusal by the government to collect data otherwise, means that a lot of things are glossed over in a structural sense. It’s not that the man on the street doesn’t know that racism is still present in Japan (he might be a bit vague on the details though), but that the government would rather you focus on something else.

Of course, even the infamous uyoku dantais hold less overt influence over LDP politics than various hate groups do on state legislatures in the US, but still, it’s there.

Of course, there’s still the chance of running into the exact people you’re running from on holiday instead.
